Eye Safety

EYE PROTECTION IN THE WORKPLACE

Each year an estimated 36,000 eye injuries occur in American workplaces. The financial cost of these injuries is enormous-more than $300 million per year in lost production time, medical expenses, and workers compensation. No dollar figure can adequately reflect the personal toll these accidents take on the injured workers.  The good news is that these injuries are preventable simply by wearing the proper eye protection.

OUR SAFETY GLASSES MEET ANSI SPECIFICATION

  • Certified Protection and Guaranteed Savings

  • The 920-922-923 and 925 styles meet ANSI Z97.1 specifications.

  • Our DAYTONA brand meet ANSI Z87.1 specifications.

  • Both styles of lens are manufactured from impact resistant polycarbonate and are coated for improved scratch resistance.

WHAT CONTRIBUTES TO EYE INJURIES AT YOUR WORK PLACE?

  • Not wearing eye protection. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that nearly three out of every five workers injured were not wearing eye protection at the time of accident.

  • Wearing the wrong kind of eye protection for the job. About 40% of the injured workers were wearing some form of eye protection when the accident occurred. These workers were most likely to be wearing eyeglasses with no side shields, though injuries among employees wearing full-cup or flat fold side shields occurred, as well.

  • Flying particles, it was found that almost 70% of the accidents resulted from flying or falling objects or sparks striking the eye. It was estimated that nearly three-fifths of the objects were smaller than a pin head.

  • Contact with chemicals caused one-fifth of the injuries. Other accidents were caused by objects swinging from a fixed or attached position, like ropes, chains, or tools pulled into the eye while the worker was using them.

  • In the Plastics industry, accidents occur from parts/runners being ground, assembly, painting, heat staking, printing,  filling hoppers, unloading hoppers, cleaning granulators, using compressed air, any type of bench grinding or cleaning, using hammer, chisel, almost all work being done in the plant.

HOW CAN EYE INJURIES BE PREVENTED?

Always wear effective eye protection!

To be effective, the eyewear must be of the appropriate type for the hazard encountered and properly fitted. For example, the BLS survey showed that 94% of the injuries in workers wearing eye protection resulted from objects or chemicals going around or under the protector. It can also be said, injuries occur when an employee is assigned eye protection and then doesn't wear the protection. Many of the injured stated that they didn't think that what they were doing, that it was necessary to wear their protection.

PROPER EYE PROTECTION MAINTENANCE

Eye protection devices must be properly maintained. Scratched and dirty glasses reduce vision, cause glare and may contribute to accidents.
